American Innovation and Jobs Act Would Advance U.S. Leadership in Semiconductor Research

WASHINGTON—March 16, 2021—The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) today released the following statement from president and CEO John Neuffer in support of introduction of the American Innovation and Jobs Act (S.749), bipartisan legislation that would would promote semiconductor research and innovation in the United States by repealing a harmful R&D tax provision. The legislation was introduced in the Senate by Sens. Margaret Hassan (D-N.H.), Todd Young (R-Ind.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), and Ben Sasse (R-Neb.). A similar bill was introduced on Feb. 24 in the House by Representatives by Reps. John Larson (D-Conn.), Ron Estes (R-Kan.), Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.), Darin LaHood (R-Ill.), Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.), and Jodey Arrington (R-Texas). SIA represents 98 percent of the U.S. semiconductor industry by revenue and nearly two-thirds of non-U.S. chip firms.

Senators Hassan, Shaheen Participate in Bipartisan Effort to Pay Tribute to Doris Moore of Portsmouth and Other Members of the Six Triple Eight Battalion

WASHINGTON – In case you missed it, The Portsmouth Herald highlighted bipartisan efforts by U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen to recognize the women of the Six Triple Eight Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female battalion serving overseas during World War II, which included Portsmouth native Doris Moore. The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion served during World War II both at home and in Europe where members sorted and routed mail for millions of American service members and civilians. Last year, the Senate passed bipartisan legislation cosponsored by Senators Hassan and Shaheen to award a Congressional Gold Medal to the battalion, and the Senators are working to get the reintroduced bill signed into law this year.

Senators Hassan, Collins Successfully Protect Funding for Rural, Low-Income School Districts in NH, ME, and Across the Country

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Susan Collins (R-ME) successfully reversed a Department of Education decision that jeopardized funding for rural, low-income school districts in New Hampshire, Maine, and across the country. A provision they negotiated that was included in the year-end government funding bill that was signed into law prevents a funding cliff for a number of school districts that receive funding through the Rural Low Income Schools (RLIS) program, under the Rural Education Achievement Program (REAP), the only dedicated federal funding stream to support rural schools.
