WASHINGTON – In case you missed it, the bipartisan Medal of Honor Act, which increases pensions for Medal of Honor recipients, was signed into law. U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH), a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, helped lead the Senate version of this bill, which will increase the monthly pension for living Medal of Honor recipients to $67,500 annually. The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration bestowed by the United States. There are 61 living Medal of Honor recipients.
“While we can never fully repay the debt that we owe to Medal of Honor recipients for their extraordinary service and sacrifice, we can help ensure that these heroes and their families receive the support that they have earned and deserve,” said Senator Hassan. “This commonsense, bipartisan legislation will help ease the financial burden on these service members and their families. It’s also an important way to thank these extraordinary Americans who risked their lives above and beyond the call of duty.”
This bipartisan bill is part of Senator Hassan’s ongoing work to support service members, veterans, and their families access the benefits and support they have earned and deserve. She helped develop and pass into law the bipartisan PACT Act, a historic bill that fundamentally reforms and improves the ways in which veterans exposed to toxic substances receive health care and benefits from the VA.
