Shaheen, Hassan Push to Ensure Survivors of Domestic Violence Can Access Their Economic Impact Payment

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) sent a letter with a group of 35 Senators, led by Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Charles Rettig urging them to take action to ensure that survivors of domestic violence can access their Economic Impact Payment. Domestic violence survivors face unique barriers that can keep them from being able to access their economic recovery rebates they are legally entitled to under the law.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) led a letter with Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ron Wyden (D-OR), and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) to tax compliance software companies about the affordability and accuracy of their products, which many small businesses use to comply with the Supreme Court’s problematic Wayfair decision. Two years ago on June 21, 2018, the Supreme Court’s Wayfair decision required businesses – even if they are located in non-sales tax states – to collect sales tax for other states and jurisdictions, creating a burdensome new tax collection system that small businesses are struggling to comply with.

Hassan, Enzi Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Help Address Coin Shortage, Save Taxpayer Dollars By Modifying Composition of Currency

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Mike Enzi (R-WY) introduced bipartisan legislation to allow the U.S. Mint to adjust the metal content of circulating coins in an effort to save taxpayer dollars. The bill could also help the U.S. Mint to produce more coins as banks face a temporary coin shortage due to COVID-19. WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) released the following statement after a ProPublica piece, How Rich Investors, Not Doctors, Profit From Marking Up ER Bills, highlighted how private equity groups that own medical staffing firms are ratcheting up consumer medical bills and skirting state corporate practice of medicine doctrines to increase their profits. Most states have this doctrine enshrined in law, which protects patients and doctors by requiring doctors to work for themselves or other doctors, not non-medical corporations. ProPublica’s investigation shows how private equity groups skirt the law in order to enhance corporate profits at the expense of patients.
