WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH), a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, recently returned from her first overseas delegation ?where she and a bipartisan group led by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) participated in meetings in the United Kingdom, Israel, Jordan, and Greece focused on the impacts of U.S. foreign aid to Jordan and Israel and the ability of U.S. support to achieve stability in the Middle East. The delegation also helped reaffirm the United States’ bipartisan commitment to these key national security allies.

Senators Shaheen and Hassan Push Interior Secretary to Restart Key Study of Offshore Drilling Safety Enforcement

WASHINGTON – Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) joined a group of their colleagues today urging Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to resume a study of the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement’s inspection program for offshore oil and gas development, which has been under way since 2016. The final report would include recommendations for how best to minimize risks associated with drilling operations, and help the Bureau make needed improvements to its safety and environmental stewardship programs that the Government Accountability Office says have fallen short.

Senator Hassan Cosponsors Bipartisan Bill to Help Bring Justice to Victims of Heinous Crimes

WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan has cosponsored bipartisan legislation to help bring justice to victims of heinous crimes, including sexual assault, by ensuring that prosecutors have the resources they need to resolve cold cases. The Justice Served Act of 2018 was introduced by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and John Cornyn (R-TX) and would provide funds for the prosecution of crimes cleared through DNA. A companion bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives by Representative John Carter (R-TX).

Bipartisan Bill Cosponsored by Senators Shaheen and Hassan to Support State and Local Veterans Treatment Courts Passes U.S. Senate

WASHINGTON – Bipartisan legislation cosponsored by Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan to support state and local veterans treatment courts passed the U.S. Senate on Thursday. The Veterans Treatment Court Improvement Act would require the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to hire additional Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO) specialists in order to ensure that veterans have greater access to effective and tailored treatment. The veterans treatment court model removes veterans from the regular criminal justice process and helps to address symptoms that are unique to veterans, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and substance misuse.

Senator Hassan Leads Colleagues in Urging DOT to Prioritize Consumers Over Airlines

WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) led her colleagues today in sending a letter to Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, urging the Department of Transportation (DOT) to consider the rights of consumers before rolling back critical protections in the commercial aviation sector. The letter follows requests from DOT for a list of rules and regulations that are good candidates for repeal, replacement, suspension, or modification. The airline industry filed a 222-page response, including requests to eliminate the requirement for airlines to display the full price of a ticket to consumers when they shop, and a potential weakening of requirements that airlines provide “prompt” service for wheelchair assistance for passengers who experience disabilities, among others.
