Senators Hassan, Shaheen Cosponsor Legislation to Overturn President Trump’s Expansion of Junk Health Insurance Plans

WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan, a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and Senator Jeanne Shaheen, yesterday joined the entire Democratic caucus in cosponsoring the No Junk Plans Act  to overturn President Trump’s expansion of junk health insurance plans that do not have to provide health care coverage for Granite Staters and Americans with pre-existing conditions. Companion legislation passed the House of Representatives last week.

Casey, Cassidy, Hassan, Young Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Remove Unnecessary Barriers for Students with Disabilities

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senators Bob Casey (D-PA), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Todd Young (R-IN) introduced the Respond, Innovate, Succeed, and Empower (RISE) Act to help ease the burden of transitioning to college for students with disabilities. The legislation would amend the Higher Education Act (HEA) and clarify that students with previous documentation of a disability would be able to continue using that documentation as proof when they transition to higher education. This would help ensure students who receive special education or accommodations because of a disability do not need to spend time and money to go through unnecessary new diagnostic testing.

Senator Hassan, Colleagues Introduce Bill to Ensure Pregnant Mothers Can Access Affordable Health Care During and After Pregnancy

WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan joined her colleagues last week to introduce legislation to expand health care options for expectant mothers. The Healthy Maternal and Obstetric Medicine (Healthy MOM) Act, would ensure that all women eligible for coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) insurance marketplaces, as well as women eligible for other individual or group health plan coverage, can access affordable health coverage throughout their pregnancies. The bill would establish a special enrollment period (SEP) for expectant mothers. Right now, marriage, divorce, giving birth, adoption, and changing jobs are considered qualifying life events that trigger a special enrollment period. However, becoming pregnant is not considered a qualifying event.

Shaheen Reintroduces Legislation to Boost Public Participation in Approval of Energy Projects and Rates

(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) reintroduced legislation to create an Office of Public Participation and Consumer Advocacy at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). As one of the lead agencies responsible for developing energy infrastructure and ensuring reliability of the electric grid, FERC has sweeping authority over the wholesale power markets and ultimate jurisdiction in the federal siting and permitting process for natural gas pipelines. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced the legislation to strengthen counterterrorism coordination efforts at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The bipartisan legislation will authorize and rename the Counterterrorism Advisory Board (CTAB), which brings together intelligence, operational, and policy-making elements from across DHS to advise the DHS Secretary on how to respond to potential terrorist attacks as well as other threats.
