Shaheen, Hassan & Kuster Announce More than $267K for Franklin School District to Bolster School Safety & Support Mental Health Services for Students

(Manchester, NH) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), the Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that funds the Department of Justice (DOJ), announced with U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Representative Annie Kuster (NH-02) that the DOJ has awarded $267,595 to the Franklin School District through DOJ’s Students, Teachers, Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Grant Program. Specifically, the funds will be used by the district to support its Office of School Wellness, which provides assistance to students who have suffered from trauma and adverse childhood experiences. By supporting the office’s critical work in educating youth, training school personnel, enriching community partnerships, developing intervention methods and improving services available to students in need, the funds will contribute to a positive, safe environment for students to learn.

Senator Hassan, Colleagues Urge Postmaster General DeJoy to Immediately Address Impacts to Election Mail Delivery Caused by USPS Failure to Update Voter Address Changes

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH), a member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee which oversees the United States Postal Service (USPS), joined her colleagues in raising concerns to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy about recent reports that for three weeks in August, USPS failed to update address changes in the National Change of Address Linkage database (NCOALink), which most states use to keep voters addresses up to date. In the letter, led by Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Gary Peters (D-MI), the Senators ask the Postmaster General to answer several questions to assure Americans that this error will not impact their ability to safely and securely vote-by-mail in the upcoming general election.

Shaheen, Hassan & Pappas Announce $1 Million for Sanbornville Water Infrastructure Project through NBRC & EDA

(Manchester, NH) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced today with U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) that the Sanbornville precinct has been awarded $1 million in federal funding to support a comprehensive water infrastructure project that will replace more than two miles of water main piping and finance improvements to the area pump station. Together, these improvements will reduce the threat of temporary business closures due to a lack of water. This grant will be allocated through the Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) in coordination with the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC). The announcement follows efforts from Senator Shaheen, who, as lead Democrat on the Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations Subcommittee, included language to appropriate federal resources that provide support for communities impacted by forest product closures.

Shaheen & Hassan Underscore Importance of Community Policing During Press Conference at Nashua Police Department

(Nashua, NH) – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) held a press conference at the Nashua Police Department in recognition of National Community Policing Week. Whitehouse, Hassan Call on Justice Department to Hold Purdue Accountable in Newly Revealed Settlement Negotiations

Washington, DC – Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) are calling on the U.S. Department of Justice to avoid a sweetheart deal for the opioid-maker Purdue Pharma and its owners, the Sackler family, in newly revealed settlement negotiations as the company goes through federal bankruptcy.  In a letter to Attorney General Bill Barr, the senators urge the Department to avoid its mistakes of the past, highlighting the Department’s failure to proceed with criminal charges laid out in a 2006 memo by federal prosecutors.  Charges then, the Senators said, may have prevented over a decade of continued overprescribing of opioids and untold opioid-related deaths.

Senators Hassan, Shaheen Join in Introducing Legislation to Stop Surprise Medical Bills for COVID-19 Tests

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) joined Senator Tina Smith (D-MN), along with a group of their colleagues, in introducing the Stop COVID-19 Test Surprise Medical Bills Act to protect Granite Staters and all Americans from unanticipated COVID-19 test charges. The measure clarifies that insurers cannot refuse to cover medically necessary tests, directs federal health officials to help ensure providers and insurers understand how to submit claims to protect patients from surprise bills, and strengthens price transparency requirements. The legislation builds on Senator Hassan’s efforts to end the practice of surprise medical billing, including by leading a bipartisan group of her colleagues in introducing the STOP Surprise Medical Bills Act to end this practice.

Shaheen & Hassan Call on Trump Administration to Take Action to Protect Workers from COVID-19

(Washington, DC) — U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) joined a group of Senators in sending a letter to U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Secretary Eugene Scalia urging him to follow his mission to assure worker safety and health and take immediate, strong action to protect workers from COVID-19 exposure, illness, and death on the job. Secretary Scalia, the Senators wrote, should instruct the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to issue an Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) requiring employers to develop and implement a comprehensive plan to protect workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. NH Delegation Announces $628K for NH to Support Family-Based Programs & Services for Incarcerated Parents with Young Children

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), the Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that funds the Department of Justice (DOJ), announced with U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Chris Pappas (NH-01) that DOJ awarded $628,472 to the New Hampshire Department of Justice through funding from the Office of Justice Programs. The funding will be used to strengthen and expand mental health and family support services in detention and correctional facilities to incarcerated parents with children younger than the age of 18. By increasing access to services that support their needs, the funding will help improve communication between inmates and their families, promote a successful reentry into society and reduce recidivism rates following their release.

House Passes Portman, Hassan Bipartisan Legislation to Modernize Federal Government’s Use of Latest Technology

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) applauded the U.S. House of Representatives for passing their bipartisan Modernization Centers of Excellence Program Act that will accelerate the adoption of the latest technologies by government agencies. This legislation expands upon Senator Portman’s bipartisan Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Government Act, which codifies an AI Center of Excellence (CoE) within the General Services Administration to provide technical expertise to relevant government agencies; advise agencies on the procurement of AI technology; and promote U.S. competitiveness through agency and industry cooperation. Inspired by Senator Portman’s legislation, GSA created the AI CoE last year. The Modernization Centers of Excellence Program Act lays out the responsibilities that all of GSA’s CoEs should have and harmonizes their roles to strengthen the government’s technology expertise beyond just AI. The legislation awaits consideration in the Senate.

The award was allocated by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Community Development Financial Institutions Fund (CDFI Fund), which enables CDFIs like the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund to increase lending and investment activity in low-income and economically distressed communities in the Granite State and across the nation.
