Senator Hassan and Bipartisan Colleagues Send Letter to FCC on Broadband Coverage Maps

WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and colleagues from both parties last week sent a letter to Chairman Pai of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) advocating for an additional public feedback mechanism that would utilize crowdsourced data to empower consumers and states to help inform broadband coverage maps and report any lack of broadband access to the FCC. The letter was also signed by U.S Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV), James Lankford (R-OK), Angus King (I-ME), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), John Kennedy (R-LA), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Doug Jones (D-AL), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI).

Senators Hassan, Shaheen Join in Reintroducing Landmark Bipartisan Legislation to Support Women Veterans

WASHINGTON – Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) today joined Senators Jon Tester (D-MT) and John Boozman (R-AK) in reintroducing the bipartisan Deborah Sampson Act to support women veterans. Women are the fastest-growing group of veterans, but many VA facilities don’t have the ability to provide equitable care or services to women veterans. The Deborah Sampson Act would eliminate barriers to care and services that many women veterans face and would help ensure that the VA can address the needs of women veterans. Senator Hassan previously wrote an op-ed with the Executive Director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) in support of the legislation.

Senator Hassan Criticizes EPA’s PFAS Action Plan For Failing to Set an Enforceable Drinking Water Standard

WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan today criticized the EPA for releasing a PFAS Action Plan that fails to set an enforceable drinking water standard, also known as a Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL), for PFOA and PFOS contaminants. At the EPA’s summit on PFAS in May 2018, then-EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt announced that the EPA would initiate steps to evaluate the need for an MCL. In this Action Plan released almost a year later, the EPA still won’t commit to setting a maximum contaminant level and says that it will be nearly another year before it determines whether an MCL necessary.

Senator Hassan Joins Colleagues in Urging President Trump to Hold China Accountable as the End of Negotiations Approach

WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan joined colleagues yesterday in urging President Trump to ensure that any trade agreement with China adequately addresses China’s predatory intellectual property practices and establishes a monitoring and enforcement mechanism to hold China accountable. The United States Trade Representative found that despite at least eight previous commitments to stop requiring U.S. companies to transfer technology in exchange for access to the Chinese market, China continues to coerce American firms. Senator Hassan is a member of the Senate Finance Committee, which sets trade policy.

Shaheen & Hassan Legislation to Save LWCF, Redesignate Saint-Gaudens Site & Protect Nashua River Passes the Senate

(Washington, DC) — U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) released the following statements after their legislation to permanently reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) passed the Senate. Shaheen and Hassan recently introduced bipartisan legislation to permanently reauthorize LWCF, which helps preserve and maintain critical lands for national parks, forests, wildlife refuges and recreational areas in all 50 states and nearly every congressional district at no cost to American taxpayers. The U.S. outdoor recreation economy generates roughly $900 billion in annual economic activity and supports 7.6 million jobs, all of which benefits from investments by LWCF. The bill passed the Senate along with Shaheen and Hassan’s legislation to protect the Nashua River and its tributaries and redesignate Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site as a “National Historical Park.”

Cotton, Hassan, and Warren Introduce the Full Military Honors Act

Washington, D.C.— Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) along with Senators Maggie Hassan (D-New Hampshire) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) today introduced the Full Military Honors Act, a bill that would allow all Medal of Honor recipients and former prisoners of war to receive a full military honors burial ceremony with an escort, regardless of rank. Currently, full military honors with an escort are reserved for senior officers, non-commissioned officers, and servicemembers killed in combat. The Full Military Honors Act passed the Senate in December of 2018. Representatives Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas), Elaine Luria (D-Virginia), Jimmy Panetta (D-California), and Scott Taylor (R-Virginia) introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives.
