WASHINGTON – On the Senate floor today, U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan shared the story of Cassandra Van Kuren of Manchester, who has struggled with the costs of treating her Type 1 diabetes,  to highlight the stakes in the fight against Washington Republicans’ attacks on affordable, accessible health care. To this day, the Administration is supporting a partisan lawsuit that would raise health care costs and take health care and protections away from tens of millions of people, and is continuing to promote “junk” insurance plans which increase costs and don’t protect patients with pre-existing conditions.

Following Ransomware Attack, Senator Hassan Meets with Sunapee School District Administrators

SUNAPEE, NH – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan, who has led efforts to strengthen state and local cybersecurity as a member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, met Friday with officials at Sunapee Middle/High School following a ransomware attack that hit the district earlier this year. Each week, the district’s IT administrators take backup data offline, and they were able to get the school back online and restore data – without paying the ransom.

Senate Clears Bill Cosponsored by Shaheen & Hassan to Award Congressional Gold Medal to WWII U.S. Army Special Operators

(Washington, DC) – Bipartisan legislation backed by Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the U.S. Army’s 5307th Composite Unit, more commonly known as “Merrill’s Marauder’s,” unanimously passed the Senate last night. The Unit became known as “Merrill’s Marauder’s” in reference to its leader, Brigadier General Frank Merrill, who later served as New Hampshire’s Highway Commissioner. The Merrill’s Marauder’s Congressional Gold Medal Act recognizes the extraordinary service of nearly 3,000 U.S. Army Special Forces volunteers whose successful efforts to drive a much larger Japanese force out of Myanmar, then called Burma, in World War II proved critical to Allied success in the theater.

WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan sent a letter to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights urging it to support repealing a discriminatory federal policy that allows employers to pay subminimum wages to employees who experience disabilities. Then-Governor Hassan led efforts to eliminate the payment of subminimum wages to individuals who experience disabilities in New Hampshire, which became the first state in the nation to outlaw this practice.

Landmark Animal Cruelty Bill Signed Into Law

WASHINGTON – President Trump yesterday signed into law landmark legislation cosponsored by the New Hampshire Congressional delegation to make animal cruelty a federal crime. The bipartisan Prevent Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act outlaws individuals from intentionally crushing, burning, drowning, suffocating, impaling or otherwise causing serious bodily injury to animals. While existing federal law prohibits animal fighting and the distribution of so-called “animal crushing” videos, there had been no federal ban against animal cruelty and torture.

Shaheen, Hassan and Kuster Announce $3 Million in Federal Funding for Claremont Municipal Airport

(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced with U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02), that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded Claremont Municipal airport a $3 million federal grant. The federal funding was awarded under the agency’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP). Shaheen helped craft the omnibus funding legislation for fiscal year (FY) 2019 that included an additional $500 million for AIP projects. While a member of the Senate Commerce Committee, Senator Hassan helped advance the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018, which included important New Hampshire priorities. The law included $3.35 billion in mandatory funding for AIP, and instructs the FAA to prioritize small or medium-sized airports located outside of metropolitan areas, like Claremont Municipal, for airport improvement funding.

Senator Hassan Cosponsors Bipartisan Bill to Stem Influx of Deadly Opioids & Other Synthetic Drugs

WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) cosponsored bipartisan legislation, led by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), aimed at stopping the importation of deadly opioids and other synthetic drugs into the United States. While existing laws prohibit the importation and use of certain specific controlled substances, illicit drug makers and importers circumvent those laws by altering a single atom or molecule of an already controlled drug to create a new, yet significantly similar substance – which in turn can make it harder to crack down on the importation of these drugs.
