Collins, Hassan Legislation to Help Americans Save for Retirement Included in Year-End Appropriations Package

Washington, D.C.—U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) announced today that several provisions from the Retirement Security Act of 2019 they introduced earlier this year were included in the final Appropriations agreement.  The agreement was passed by the House today.  Once passed by the Senate, the bill will proceed to the President’s desk to be signed into law.

WASHINGTON – The bipartisan Kay Hagan TICK Act, cosponsored by Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH), to improve research, prevention, diagnostics, and treatment for tick-borne diseases, such as Lyme disease, was included in the year-end agreement to fund the government for the next fiscal year. The bipartisan Kay Hagan TICK Act was authored by Senators Susan Collin (R-ME) and Tina Smith (D-MN), and is named for the former North Carolina Senator Kay Hagan, who recently succumbed to the tick-borne disease encephalitis.

Bipartisan Hassan Measures to Reverse Tax Increases on Gold Star Families and Students Included in Government Funding Legislation

WASHINGTON – Bipartisan measures backed by Senator Maggie Hassan to reverse tax increases from the 2017 Republican tax law that hurt Gold Star families and students are expected to be signed into law as part of year-end government funding legislation. Additionally, a bipartisan measure supported by Senator Hassan to repeal the so-called “Widow’s Tax” that prevents as many as 65,000 surviving military spouses nationwide from receiving their full survivor benefits was also included in the National Defense Authorization Act, which is on its way to the President’s desk.

Senator Hassan, Colleagues Call on Purdue Pharma to Cancel $1.3 Million Bonus for CEO

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) joined Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and a number of their colleagues in sending a letter to Purdue Pharma’s Board of Directors, calling on them to cancel the reported $1.3 million bonus they plan to give to Purdue Pharma CEO Craig Landau. Attorneys General from 24 states, including New Hampshire, have argued that Landau should not collect a bonus, and on Thursday, a bankruptcy judge is expected to issue a decision on whether the CEO can collect it.

Senator Hassan Participates in Bipartisan Delegation to Commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) joined a bipartisan Senate delegation to Belgium and Luxembourg to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, which Senator Hassan’s father, Robert Wood, fought in as a member of the 76th Infantry Division. Wood served as an infantry sergeant in the 385th Regiment, Company C. In addition, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution that Senator Hassan cosponsored commemorating the 75th anniversary.

WASHINGTON – Following a Government Accountability Office report that Veterans Health Administration facilities are hiring providers with a history of misconduct, U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Joni Ernst (R-IA), and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) today introduced a bipartisan bill to address the problems raised in the report. In October, the Senators sent an oversight letter to the VA requesting detailed information about the steps it will take to implement the report’s recommendations, but the Senators have yet to receive a response.

Key Committee Advances Hassan’s Efforts to Support Grandfamilies and Relative Caregivers, Prevent Child Abuse

WASHINGTON – The Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee today reauthorized the bipartisan Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), which includes measures that Senator Maggie Hassan fought to include to ensure that family members caring for children who have been exposed to substance misuse or other trauma are eligible for necessary child support services. The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act also includes provisions from a bipartisan bill that Senator Hassan joined in introducing to help educate professionals who work with children who have experienced sexual abuse.

Hassan-Backed Bill to Address Veteran Suicide Passes Senate, Heads to President’s Desk

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Senate today voted to send to the President’s desk the Support for Suicide Prevention Coordinators Act, bipartisan legislation Senator Hassan cosponsored that is aimed at reducing the high suicide rate among veterans. The bill directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to evaluate the Suicide Prevention Coordinators program, looking at staffing shortages and the workload of the coordinators. These coordinators are responsible for an array of suicide prevention activities at the VA, including counseling, identifying high-risk veterans, conducting outreach, and promoting awareness of veteran suicide.
