Senator Hassan Presents Hampton Fire/Rescue with Federal Grant to Support Fire Fighters

HAMPTON – Senator Maggie Hassan today visited Hampton Fire/Rescue, where she presented the Department with a Federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant of approximately $80,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and commended the brave public safety officials for all that they do to protect their fellow Granite Staters, particularly through their efforts on the front lines of the fentanyl, heroin, and opioid epidemic. The federal grant will allow Hampton Fire/Rescue to purchase mobile radios, base radios, and pagers for Hampton’s fire fighters.

NH Delegation Announces $5.8M to Respond to Severe Weather Events in NH

(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Congresswomen Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) and Annie Kuster (NH-02) announced $5,786,070 in federal Public Assistance grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). These grants include $1,687,439 to Belknap and Carroll counties, $1,417,542 to Coos and Grafton counties, $1,942,460 to Belknap, Carroll, Coos, Grafton, Merrimack, and Sullivan counties, and $738,628 to Carroll, Rockingham, and Strafford counties to assist response efforts after severe flooding and winter storms last year.

NH Delegation Announces $500,000 in Federal Funds for Granite State Wildlife Programs to Boost Conservation Efforts

(Washington, DC) –  Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH), and Congresswomen Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) and Annie Kuster (NH-02), announced that the U.S. Department of Interior has awarded New Hampshire more than $500,000 through the State Wildlife Grant (SWG) Program to boost Granite State conservation efforts. The SWG Program is a major funding source for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department’s Nongame Wildlife Program. Together with state matching funds, SWG dollars are used to restore habitat, conduct research and implement monitoring programs that enhance the state’s ability to manage and keep imperiled species from being listed as an endangered species.

NH Delegation Announces $1.35M in Federal Funding for Urban Community Development & Affordable Housing in New Hampshire

(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Congresswomen Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) and Annie Kuster (NH-02) announced $1,346,482 in grants for urban community development and affordable housing in New Hampshire from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). These grants include $658,301 to Nashua and $290,005 to Dover in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), and a $398,176 HOME Grant to Nashua. These grants are an increase of $198,404 from the previous year, and will support efforts to expand affordable housing throughout New Hampshire, particularly for people experiencing a housing crisis or homelessness, and expand economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate income individuals.

NH Delegation Urges EPA to Level the Playing Field for Biomass Industry

(Washington, DC) – Yesterday, U.S Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) sent a letter with Congresswomen Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) and Annie Kuster (NH-02) to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), urging the administration to move forward with a proposed rule that would allow renewable electricity made from biomass to qualify for the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program if it is used to power electric vehicles. This would level the playing field among competing fuel sources, and enable biomass power plants to generate and sell credits under the RFS program to refiners that must meet national renewable fuel targets. If enacted, the proposed rule would spur the deployment of electric vehicles and provide another source of revenue for New Hampshire’s seven wood-fire power plants.

NH Delegation Announces $1.25M to Bolster School Safety Efforts in NH

(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Congresswomen Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) and Annie Kuster (NH-02) announced $1,249,762 in federal grants to bolster school safety efforts in New Hampshire from the Bureau of Justice Assistance at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).  These grants include $500,000 to the New Hampshire Department of Education and $249,762 to Merrimack County to fund violence prevention and mental health training programs in schools, and $500,000 to the New Hampshire Department of Education to develop threat assessment and crisis intervention programs. This funding will improve school security and prepare students and teachers to recognize, respond to, and prevent acts of violence.

Shaheen & Hassan To Each Introduce Legislation to Combat Escalating Out-of-Pocket Health Care Costs, Stabilize Health Care Marketplace & End Surprise Medical Bills

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) introduced legislation today to combat escalating out-of-pocket health care costs for uninsured patients and for patients in the individual health insurance market who receive out-of-network care. U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) also announced that she will introduce companion legislation to help eliminate a related problem: surprise medical bills, where patients receive massive, unexpected medical bills, often for receiving care that they didn’t realize was considered out-of-network. Shaheen’s legislation protects patients who are uninsured or in the individual health insurance market, while Hassan’s legislation protects patients with employer-sponsored health plans.
