WASHINGTON – In case you missed it, The New York Times published an article today highlighting efforts in Congress to curb evictions, including Senator Maggie Hassan’s bill, the Prevent Evictions Act, that would support landlords and tenants alike through cost-effective solutions to keep families in their homes. The bipartisan funding bill that the Senate passed in October included a piece of Senator Hassan’s bill that instructs the Department of Housing and Urban Development to move forward its analysis of eviction prevention insurance.

Senator Hassan Presses FDA Official on Delay in Banning Flavored E-Cigarettes

WASHINGTON – In case you missed it, Senator Maggie Hassan pressed the Director of the Center for Tobacco Products at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Mitch Zeller, on the FDA’s delayed response in banning flavored e-cigarettes, which have been linked to a rise in youth e-cigarette use. According to a recently released report from the Center for Disease Control Youth Risk Behavior Survey, New Hampshire has the highest percentage of high school students in the nation reporting daily use of e-cigarettes.

Senator Hassan Introduces Bipartisan Legislation to Help High School Students Earn College Credit

WASHINGTON – In case you missed it, Senator Maggie Hassan introduced bipartisan legislation last week with Senator Todd Young (R-IN) to create a grant program aimed at helping more students earn college credits while still in high school. New Hampshire has extensive dual-enrollment programs in place, with almost 100 high schools in the state offering the Running Start program in partnership with the Community College System of New Hampshire. These types of early college programs provide academically-prepared high school students the opportunity to receive college credit while they are still in high school.

Senator Hassan Op-Ed in Nashua Telegraph: Keeping Families in Their Homes

WASHINGTON – In case you missed it, the Nashua Telegraph on Sunday ran an op-ed written by Senator Maggie Hassan that discusses the high housing costs in New Hampshire and legislation that she is working on that could help bring relief to families struggling to make rent. Senator Hassan helped introduce the Rent Relief Act to create a new, refundable tax credit to help families make rent, and led the introduction of the Prevent Evictions Act – which is backed by Matthew Desmond, author of the Pulitzer Prize winning book Evicted – that would support cost-effective solutions to keep families in their homes, including through landlord-tenant mediation programs and rent insurance programs.
