Following Push from Senator Hassan, U.S. to Release Oil from Strategic Petroleum Reserve

WASHINGTON – Following calls from U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) for the Biden administration to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the U.S. and allies announced today that they will do so.

“Granite Staters and Americans across the country are struggling with rising oil and gas costs, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine makes it even more important to take action to lower costs,” said Senator Hassan. “I am glad that the Biden administration is heeding my call to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as one step to address rising gas prices, and I will keep working to bring down costs for families.”

Last week, Senator Hassan and her colleagues called on President Biden to release oil from the federal government’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve and take additional action to help bring down energy prices and lower costs for Granite Staters. In November, Senator Hassan successfully led a bipartisan group of her colleagues in pushing the Biden administration to release 50 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. To further help Americans at the pump, Senator Hassan also led a group of her colleagues in introducing legislation to eliminate the federal gas tax through the end of the year.
