Hassan, Shaheen, and Pappas Visit General Sullivan Bridge Project Site to Discuss $20 Million In Federal Funding

DOVER – U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen and Congressman Chris Pappas visited the General Sullivan Bridge project site in Dover to discuss how $20 million in federal funding that they secured will be put to use to create the new bicycle and pedestrian crossing bridge. They were joined by a representative from the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, Dover Mayor Robert Carrier, and other local officials who collaborated with the congressional delegation to secure this grant.

“It was great to celebrate the General Sullivan Bridge project today -- my colleagues and I crafted the bipartisan infrastructure law because we wanted to make projects like this one possible," said Senator Hassan. "This project embodies the New Hampshire spirit of working together and solving problems, demonstrating what we can accomplish when we collaborate. I look forward to seeing how this new bridge will help grow the local economy and strengthen ties between the communities of Dover and Newington. ”

“I was glad to join Senator Hassan and Congressman Pappas today in Dover to discuss how federal funds we secured through the RAISE Grant program will support the construction of a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge in place of the current General Sullivan Bridge,” said Senator Shaheen. “In addition to easing travel for pedestrians and bicyclists, this project is an important investment in the economic vitality of New Hampshire’s Seacoast communities. I look forward to seeing the impact of this RAISE Grant on environmental sustainability, community connectivity and economic development across the region.”

“This project to revitalize the General Sullivan Bridge as a multi-use bike and pedestrian path will improve quality of life in the area and drive economic development,” said Congressman Pappas. “I was proud to join our Congressional delegation today to discuss the federal funding we worked to secure to support this project and meet with local leaders and stakeholders to hear about the importance of this work. I remain committed to returning additional federal dollars to New Hampshire to rebuild our infrastructure and create good-paying jobs.”

The dilapidated, out-of-use General Sullivan Bridge will be replaced with a new two-girder superstructure to re-open the multi-use path across Little Bay that provides a link between Newington and Dover. The New Hampshire Congressional Delegation successfully pushed the Department of Transportation to award a RAISE grant for this General Sullivan Bridge Project, and Senators Hassan and Shaheen increased funding for the overall RAISE grant program as part of the bipartisan infrastructure law that they helped negotiate.
