NH Delegation & Commerce Secretary Raimondo Participate in Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at onsemi Facility in Hudson

**Visit Follows Historic CHIPS & Science Act Becoming Law**

(Nashua, NH) – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies (CJS), U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH), who joined in introducing the original CHIPS and Science Act, and Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Chris Pappas (NH-01) joined U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo to participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony of onsemi’s newest manufacturing facility in Hudson. The delegation and Secretary met with onsemi leadership and highlighted the impact of the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act of 2022which was supported by the delegation and is now law – for manufacturing companies in New Hampshire and across the nation.

onsemi is a manufacturing company known for its production of silicon carbide – a key material in next-generation semiconductors that significantly improves system efficiency in electric vehicles, electric vehicle charging and energy infrastructure.

“I was excited to see onsemi’s new facility and talk with company leaders and Secretary Raimondo about what new resources are available now that the CHIPS and Science Act is law of the land. It’s businesses like onsemi that are leading in innovation and creating good-paying jobs for workers across the Granite State – the CHIPS and Science Act is specifically geared to empower these businesses that are fueling our 21st century economy,” said Senator Shaheen. “I’m also grateful for Secretary Raimondo’s visit today – she's been an instrumental partner and shows how engaged the administration is each step of the way. As the Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee that funds the Department of Commerce and Science agencies, I look forward to ensuring this new competition and innovation law is properly implemented and serves the needs of Granite State businesses.”

“Our bipartisan innovation and competition bill – now law – helps America outcompete China so that we can remain the world’s number one innovator and protect our economic and national security. New Hampshire is uniquely well-equipped to lead in these efforts, and onsemi’s new semiconductor manufacturing facility in Hudson is a testament to our spirit of innovation. It was a pleasure to join their team – alongside Secretary Raimondo and the New Hampshire delegation – to celebrate their ribbon cutting. I worked with my Republican and Democratic colleagues for over a year to get this bill across the finish line, and I look forward to seeing how it will drive innovation, help lower costs, and increase manufacturing here at home,” said Senator Hassan.

"It was great to see onsemi's new semiconductor facility today alongside Secretary Raimondo and our Congressional Delegation, and to discuss the positive impact the CHIPS and Science Act will have on our nation's security, economy, and competitiveness with China," said Rep. Kuster. "It’s exciting to see the Granite State helping to lead the way in the high-tech economy and promoting American leadership on the world stage. This bipartisan innovation and competition bill will ensure crucial computer chips necessary for everyday life are manufactured right here in the United States, create thousands of jobs, bolster our national security, lower costs for consumers, and position America to lead the high-tech economy of the future."

“New Hampshire has always played a vital role in domestic manufacturing and innovation, and it’s great to be here today to celebrate the opening of a new facility that exemplifies how our manufacturing sector continues to lead the way in innovation,” said Rep. Pappas. “This will only be bolstered by the investments soon to come our way now that the CHIPS and Science Act is law. This law will strengthen New Hampshire’s economy by supporting the work of our manufacturers, small businesses, and workers, and it will lower costs and fix broken supply chains. As we move forward, I’ll keep fighting to make sure our communities see the full benefits of this legislation.”

“This is a historic week for American-made chips and today’s announcement is an important step in our efforts to bring chipmaking back home,” said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “Senators Shaheen and Hassan and Representatives Kuster and Pappas worked tirelessly to get the CHIPS and Science Act to President Biden’s desk. I also applaud onsemi for choosing to invest in America. I’m confident that with President Biden’s enactment of the CHIPS and Science Act, we’re going to see more investments in the semiconductor industry across America.”

"onsemi is grateful to Secretary Raimondo and today's attending delegation of governmental dignitaries for their drive and support to pass the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act that will positively impact the entire semiconductor industry," said Hassane El-Khoury, president and CEO of onsemi. "We are honored to have them attend the inauguration celebration of our new silicon carbide manufacturing facility in Hudson, NH, at such a critical time for our industry. We are ready and excited to do our part to build a more sustainable future by enabling electric vehicles (EVs), EV charging and energy infrastructure with onsemi intelligent power technologies."

In addition to developing U.S. policy to address strategic, economic and diplomatic tools for a global strategy, this comprehensive package also invests in scientific research and microchips that are key to the U.S. economy and military, as well as strengthens domestic manufacturing and the supply chain.

As Chair of the CJS subcommittee, Shaheen will work closely with Secretary Raimondo and the Department of Commerce to ensure the successful implementation of the CHIPS and Science Act. Shaheen successfully secured inclusion of language based on her bipartisan Supporting STEM Learning Opportunities Act to allow funds to support research and development of innovative STEM educational programming, including afterschool and other outside of the classroom activities. This language seeks to improve federal investments in experiential learning opportunities to strengthen the pipeline of students entering the STEM workforce, especially from traditionally underrepresented groups like women and communities of color.

Senator Hassan joined a bipartisan group of colleagues in first introducing the CHIPS and Science Act, and has met with New Hampshire businesses to discuss how the law will support American manufacturing, lower costs, and help the U.S. outcompete China. Senator Hassan specifically secured provisions in the bill to strengthen quantum capabilities – which are essential for military technology. New Hampshire business leaders recently applauded Senator Hassan’s leadership on the bill.
