Senator Hassan Applauds FDA Approval of Over-The-Counter Birth Control, Calls for Full Insurance Coverage

WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) applauded today’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of the first birth control pill that will be available without a prescription.

“Expanding access to birth control is a key way to protect a woman’s fundamental freedom and stand up to the attacks on women’s reproductive rights that we’ve seen in New Hampshire and across the country,” said Senator Hassan. “Allowing birth control to be sold over the counter will make it easier for women across the country to access contraception, and I urge insurance companies to fully cover this important form of reproductive health care.”

Senator Hassan is focused on protecting reproductive freedom. In May, Senator Hassan and colleagues introduced a bill to require health insurance companies to fully cover over-the-counter birth control without any fees or out-of-pocket costs. Additionally, last year she called on the Biden administration to improve enforcement of the federal law that guarantees complete coverage of birth control for women who get their health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Senator Hassan also pressed for answers from top companies amid reports they are illegally delaying or denying patients insurance coverage for birth control.
