Senator Hassan Co-Sponsors Constitutional Amendment to Overturn Citizens United Decision

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan announced that she is co-sponsoring the Democracy for All Amendment, a constitutional amendment that would overturn the Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. FEC and help reduce the influence of money in politics.

The Democracy for All Amendment was introduced in the House of Representatives by Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22), Congressman Jim McGovern (MA-02), and Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08), and in the Senate by Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) and Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO). This resolution would re-affirm the right of the people to pass state and federal laws regulating spending in elections, helping to get big money out of politics and restore democratic power to the American people.

"Overturning Citizens United and reducing the influence of money in politics is critical to the health of our democracy," Senator Hassan said. "I have long fought for campaign finance reform and to ensure that corporatespecial interests do not control our politics, and I am proud to join my colleagues in the House and Senate in co-sponsoring this important resolution. Fixing the broken campaign finance system shouldn't be a partisan issue, and I will work with anyone on either side of the aisle who is serious about standing up to special interests and getting dark money out of politics."
