Senator Hassan Statement on Announcement Regarding VA New England Healthcare System

WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan released the following statement on VA Secretary David Shulkin’s announcement regarding VISN 1 – the VA New England Healthcare System. The Senator also responded to a new Inspector General report outlining oversight failures at the VA.

“I appreciate the announcement of new steps intended to strengthen accountability and performance of the VA regional healthcare systems, including bringing in new leadership for the New England region,” Senator Hassan said. “New Hampshire veterans have faced unacceptable challenges with the VA, and it is clear that changes are needed at the regional level. Today’s report from the VA Inspector General also underscores the need for continued reform of the VA system in other parts of the country as well.

“I look forward to working with the new leadership of the New England region, Manchester VAMC Director Al Montoya, and the New Hampshire’s veterans community to ensure that all of our veterans can get the care that they need and have earned,” added Senator Hassan.

Senator Hassan has met with whistleblowers, Manchester VA representatives, and Secretary Shulkin as part of her efforts to hold the VA accountable and ensure that New Hampshire veterans receive the full scope of health services that they need. The Senator also met with New Hampshire members of the American Legion last week, and will be meeting with New Hampshire members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Paralyzed Veterans of America New England Chapter this week.
