MANCHESTER – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan met with leaders and students from MY TURN and the Manchester School District to hear about the important services that MY TURN provides for learners of all ages, and the ways in which the chaos and uncertainty of the Trump Administration’s actions are threatening these programs.
The Trump Administration unilaterally froze funding for adult education and other education funding for nearly a month – leaving organizations like MY TURN uncertain about their ability to continue serving Granite Staters. After advocacy from Senator Hassan and other Granite Staters, the Trump Administration finally moved to reverse its freeze on Friday, though the chaos this caused has still left organizations uneasy about the future of the services that they provide.
“Programs like MY TURN are critical partners to New Hampshire school districts and provide important services like adult education, afterschool programming, and workforce training,” said Senator Hassan. “I was grateful to join leaders and students from MY TURN and the Manchester School District to hear what these important services mean to them. Instead of threatening and disrupting the services that organizations like MY TURN provide, I urge the Trump Administration to stop with its manufactured chaos and to join me as I work to support New Hampshire students, educators, and families.”
MY TURN offers a variety of services and programs for children and adults, and has a presence in Manchester Central, West, and Memorial high schools and oversees HiSET Academy programs at their offices in Manchester. HiSET Academy helps to prepare students to take the High School Equivalency Test, which is a standardized test designed to assess the knowledge and skills of individuals who did not graduate from high school. MY TURN also works with schools in Nashua, Franklin, and Rochester through their Employment Plus Programs, which help students get the guidance, training, and support they need to enter the workforce. Additionally, MY TURN operates an afterschool program in its Manchester location and works on violence prevention with the Young Adult Court.
