Senate Passes Shaheen, Hassan Bipartisan Resolution to Designate National Community Policing Week
(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) announced the passage of their Senate Resolution designating the first week of October as “National Community Policing Week.” The bipartisan resolution recognizes the sacrifices of police officers and expresses support for building trust and mutual respect in communities through sustained and meaningful engagement between law enforcement and civilians. It encourages the people of the United States, law enforcement agencies, and elected officials to identify ways in which communities may improve public safety, strengthen relationships and build trust. Senator Hassan Participates in HELP Committee Hearing on Federal Response to the Opioid Crisis
WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan participated today in a Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee hearing on the federal response to the heroin, fentanyl, and opioid crisis. Senator Hassan questioned Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Scott Gottlieb on what steps the FDA is taking to implement the bipartisan Opioid Addiction Risk Transparency Act, legislation that Senator Hassan introduced with Senator Todd Young (R-IN) to help ensure that health care providers understand the addiction risks of “abuse-deterrent” opioids so that they can properly communicate those risks to their patients. The bill was signed into law as part of the FDA Reauthorization Act of 2017.

Senate Committee Passes McCain-McCaskill-Hassan Bill to Improve Border Security Operations
Washington, D.C. – The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs today passed the Border Security Technology Accountability Act, legislation cosponsored by Senators John McCain (R-AZ), Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) that would improve the management and accountability of Department of Homeland Security border technology acquisition programs, which numerous reports have concluded are at “high-risk” for waste, fraud and abuse. Senate Homeland Security Committee Passes Bipartisan Hassan-Portman Hack DHS Act
WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee passed the bipartisan Hack Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Act, which was introduced by Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Rob Portman (R-OH). The bill, which is also cosponsored by Senators Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and Kamala Harris (D-CA), would establish a bug bounty pilot program – modeled off of similar programs at the Department of Defense and major tech companies – in order to strengthen cyber defenses at DHS by utilizing “white-hat” or ethical hackers to help identify unique and undiscovered vulnerabilities in the DHS networks and information technology.
