NH Delegation Announces More Than $1.3 Million for Student Support Services at UNH, Keene State and Plymouth State
(Manchester, NH) – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Chris Pappas (NH-01) announced the award of $1,364,423 in federal funding to the University of New Hampshire (UNH), Keene State College (KSC) and Plymouth State University (PSU) to bolster and expand vital student support services. UNH, KSC and PSU will receive $379,979, $364,948 and $357,608 for the TRIO Student Support Services program, which serves low-income and potential first-generation college students in higher education. In addition, KSC will receive a $261,888 award to fund a new pilot program that will serve 120 first-generation, low-income students and students with disabilities who have a need for academic support and are pursuing a STEM degree.

(Washington, DC) – As reports of domestic violence increase across the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) joined U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and U.S. Representative Jim Himes (D-CT) in introducing strongly-supported bicameral legislation to protect domestic violence survivors from gun violence. The Lori Jackson Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act is narrowly crafted to close loopholes that allow domestic abusers to legally obtain weapons. The bill is named in memory of Lori Jackson, an Oxford, Connecticut mother of two who was tragically shot and killed by her estranged husband, who had legally obtained a handgun even though he was subject to a temporary restraining order.

Shaheen, Hassan Fight to Secure Child Care Relief in Next Senate COVID-19 Stimulus Package

Senate Clears Shaheen & Hassan-Cosponsored Veterans Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Legislation
(Washington, DC) –The U.S. Senate unanimously passed the Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act – bipartisan legislation cosponsored by U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) – to improve veterans’ access to mental health care. This landmark legislation is a comprehensive and aggressive approach to connect more veterans with mental health care. This bill will bolster the VA’s mental health workforce and increase rural or hard-to-reach veterans’ access to VA care, while making sure veterans have access to alternative and local treatment options. NH Delegation Statement on President’s Approval of Guard Activation Extension at Only 75% Federal Reimbursement
(Washington, DC)— U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Chris Pappas (NH-01) issued the following joint statement after President Trump authorized an extension of the New Hampshire National Guard’s activation through December 31st to help respond to COVID-19 but with reduced federal funding support. Starting August 21st, New Hampshire will be reimbursed 75 percent for the Guard’s activation rather than the current reimbursement of 100 percent. Only Texas and Florida’s Guard activation will be supported entirely by federal funding. The New Hampshire Congressional Delegation has repeatedly called for the Guard’s activation to be fully funded federally.

Young, Hassan Introduce AT HOME Act to Help Offset Remote Work Expenses
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senators Todd Young (R-Ind.) and Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) introduced the Advancing Teachers and Home Office Modernization for Employees (AT HOME) Act to help alleviate some of the costs Americans have incurred as they work from home due to the coronavirus. The bill would establish a tax credit for small businesses and an above-the-line deduction for individuals to help offset the cost of investments in remote work equipment, software, and network services necessary for Americans to work safely from home for the remainder of 2020. Teachers can utilize this new above-the-line deduction for the additional costs incurred setting up a remote classroom, on top of the $250 deduction already provided in the tax code.
