Senators Markey, Cantwell, Van Hollen, Bennet, and Hassan, and Congresswoman Meng Celebrate FCC Unanimous Implementation of More Than $7 Billion E-Rate Distance Learning Program Created by American Rescue Plan

Washington (May 10, 2021) – Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) and Congresswoman Grace Meng (NY-06), today hailed the FCC’s unanimous and bipartisan implementation of their legislation, the Emergency Educational Connections Act, and the more than $7 billion in funding for the E-Rate (Education-Rate) program that was included in the American Rescue Plan that became law in March. The lawmakers’ legislation will help close the “homework gap” by funding elementary and secondary schools and libraries, including tribal schools and libraries, to provide Wi-Fi hotspots, modems, routers, and internet-enabled devices, including internet service through such equipment, to students, staff, and patrons.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan, a member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and Senator Jeanne Shaheen joined in introducing the Veteran Families Health Services Act of 2021, comprehensive legislation that would, among other things, ensure that service members’ and veterans’ fertility treatments, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), and counseling are covered by their health benefits.

Following Push from Senator Hassan, National Guard and Reserve Members Can Use Both Tuition Assistance and GI Bill Education Benefits

Office of the Secretary of Defense has signed a memorandum enabling members of the National Guard and Reserves to concurrently use Federal Tuition Assistance and GI Bill benefits to fund their education, similar to active duty service members. This comes after Senator Hassan joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers in urging the Secretary of Defense to take the final steps in restoring these benefits. The policy change will achieve the goals of the Montgomery GI Bill Parity Act, bipartisan legislation that Senator Hassan previously joined in introducing with Senators John Hoeven (R-ND), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), and additional Senators.

NH Delegation Welcomes Nearly $1 Million to NH to Support COVID-19 Vaccinations in Underserved Areas

(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Chris Pappas (NH-01) welcomed nearly $1 million to New Hampshire to support COVID-19 vaccination efforts. Specifically, the funding provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will support vaccine education and outreach efforts led by a community-based workforce comprised of trusted community leaders. The funding comes from the American Rescue Plan and is meant to increase vaccine confidence and address barriers to vaccination in underserved and vulnerable communities.

Senate Passes Bipartisan Congressional Gold Medal Act to Honor Doris Moore of Portsmouth and Other Members of the Six Triple Eight Battalion

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Senate passed bipartisan legislation last week, cosponsored by U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen, to award a Congressional Gold Medal to the women of the Six Triple Eight Battalion, which was the only all-Black, all-female battalion serving overseas during World War II and included Portsmouth native Doris Moore. The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion served during World War II both at home and in Europe where members sorted and routed mail for millions of American service members and civilians.

Senators Hassan and Rubio Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Expedite Public Service Loan Forgiveness for Service Members

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH), a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, and Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced bipartisan legislation to expedite student loan forgiveness for service members. The bipartisan Recognizing Military Service in Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Act would allow service members who pause their student loan payments while deployed or on extended active duty orders to count that period of time toward their student loan forgiveness – which is currently not allowed. Senator Hassan is leading efforts to strengthen the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program to help ensure that millions of public servants -- such as fire fighters, law enforcement, teachers, and members of the military -- qualify for the loan forgiveness that they have earned.
