WASHINGTON – While the CARES Act that the president signed into law last week ensured that the Treasury Department had the authority to send automatic direct cash assistance to Social Security beneficiaries regardless of whether they file taxes or not, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released contradictory guidance earlier this week stating that Social Security beneficiaries would need to file tax returns in order to receive direct payments.

Following Outreach from Hassan & Shaheen, Major Insurance Companies Announce Policy to Waive Cost-Sharing for COVID-19 Expenses, Including Testing and Treatment
WASHINGTON – Following outreach from U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen, two major insurance companies, Humana and Cigna, have announced that they will waive in-network and out-of-network cost-sharing for COVID-19 medical expenses, which includes testing and treatment, for both presumptive and confirmed COVID-19 cases. Humana and Cigna’s decision comes after Senators Hassan and Shaheen urged insurance companies to cover all COVID-19-related treatment and services without cost-sharing requirements, which would allow Granite Staters and Americans to get tested, assessed, and treated without the fear of unexpected medical bills.

NH Delegation Announces $147 Million in Additional Funding That NH Can Expect From New Law to Respond to COVID-19
(Washington, DC)—U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a negotiator of the recent COVID-19 economic response legislation, and Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Chris Pappas (NH-01) announced $147 million that New Hampshire can expect from this new law that was signed by the President on Friday. This funding is in addition to the $1.25 billion that the state will receive to compensate for COVID-19 emergency response efforts. Further allocations to New Hampshire through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) and other response legislation will be announced as they become available.

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) sent a letter with 32 of their colleagues to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), urging it to protect seniors from coronavirus-related scams. In response to the recent increase in these scams, the letter to FTC Chairman Joseph Simons calls on the FTC to better inform seniors about coronavirus scams and assist victims in understanding their recourse options to ensure that seniors are protected from those attempting to financially exploit them during the pandemic.
