Hassan, Shaheen Announce $2.5 Million Grant to Expand New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen

WASHINGTON – Senators Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen today announced a $2.5 million grant to expand and develop an additional 4.6 acres of the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, as well as conduct needed repairs.  The VA’s Veterans Cemetery Grants Program awards grants to states and tribal partners with the goal of providing 95 percent of the veteran population with access to a burial option within 75 miles of their home.

NH Delegation Calls on Trump Administration to Prioritize Pediatric Cancer Research

(Washington, DC) – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) sent a letter with Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Congresswomen Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) and Annie Kuster (NH-02) calling on the Trump Administration to release information on actions taken by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to examine the factors that are contributing to high pediatric cancer rates in New Hampshire and other states, including environmental contamination. In the letter, the delegation requested information specific to contributing factors to pediatric cancers in New Hampshire that may differ from those in other states, as well as details on planned action to address these factors and combat rising pediatric cancer rates and on opportunities for Granite Staters to receive information related to pediatric cancer health concerns.

New Hampshire Delegation Applauds Approval of Medicaid Waiver to Expand Substance Use Disorder Treatment Availability in New Hampshire

(Washington, DC)—U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH), and Congresswomen Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) and Annie Kuster (NH-02), welcomed approval of New Hampshire’s request to allow Medicaid recipients suffering from substance use disorders to receive treatment from larger inpatient substance use disorder and mental health treatment facilities for short-term stays. The waiver addresses the Medicaid Institution for Mental Diseases (IMD) exclusion, which bars Medicaid matching funds from being used to treat Medicaid beneficiaries in mental health facilities with more than 16 beds. This exclusion places burdens on smaller facilities to meet service capacity needs that exceed the smaller facilities’ resources. In April, the New Hampshire delegation wrote a letter to the Trump administration requesting approval of this necessary waiver to help meet the high demand for substance use disorder treatment.

Senators Hassan, Shaheen Announce $73,000 Grant for UNH Institute on Disability to Study Individuals Who Experience Disabilities in Housing and Urban Development Programs

WASHINGTON – Senators Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen today announced that the University of New Hampshire Institute on Disability (UNH IOD) received a federal grant of more than $73,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to conduct research in collaboration with HUD’s Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R). The grant will support research on Granite Staters and Americans who experience disabilities using HUD programs. In 2017, it was estimated that that 44 percent of HUD-assisted adults experience a disability.
