Senators Shaheen, Hassan Help Introduce Revamped DISCLOSE Act to Address Threats to America’s Campaign Finance System

WASHINGTON – Yesterday, Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) helped introduce a new version of the DISCLOSE Act, legislation sponsored by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), to require organizations spending money in elections to disclose their donors.  The new bill would also crack down on shell companies by requiring companies spending money in elections to disclose the true owner of the company, so election officials and the public know who is behind the company.  Under current law, foreign nationals and foreign corporations are prohibited from engaging in any election spending.  However, domestic companies with significant foreign ownership are not subject to the same restrictions.  The DISCLOSE Act of 2017 would prohibit domestic corporations with significant foreign control, ownership, or direction from spending money in U.S. elections.

Shaheen, Hassan Join Colleagues to Introduce Refund Equality Act to Provide Equal Tax Treatment for Married Same-Sex Couples

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) joined 71 of their congressional colleagues today to introduce the Refund Equality Act of 2017. This legislation would ensure that legally-married same-sex couples - who until the U.S. Supreme Court's 2013 Windsor decision were barred from filing federal taxes jointly - are permitted to file amended tax returns back to the date of their marriage. Shaheen, Hassan Urge DEA to Lower Opioid Quotas to Combat Prescription Drug Misuse

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) joined a group of sixteen senators in sending a letter to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), urging the agency to better prevent painkillers from flooding the market by setting lower opioid production quotas for 2018. DEA-approved opioid production volumes remain troublingly high—including 55 percent higher oxycodone levels in 2017 than in 2007.
