Senators Hassan, Shaheen Announce $73,000 Grant for UNH Institute on Disability to Study Individuals Who Experience Disabilities in Housing and Urban Development Programs
WASHINGTON – Senators Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen today announced that the University of New Hampshire Institute on Disability (UNH IOD) received a federal grant of more than $73,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to conduct research in collaboration with HUD’s Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R). The grant will support research on Granite Staters and Americans who experience disabilities using HUD programs. In 2017, it was estimated that that 44 percent of HUD-assisted adults experience a disability.

Shaheen, Hassan Join Senate & House Democrats to Introduce New Legislation to Strengthen Rights of Workers to Join Unions & Bargain Collectively
(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) joined Senate and House Democrats yesterday to introduce the Public Service Freedom to Negotiate Act, bicameral legislation to guarantee the right for public employees to organize, act concertedly and bargain collectively in states that currently do not afford these basic protections. Senate and House Democrats introduced the legislation in response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Janus v. AFSCME, which will weaken unions’ ability to advocate for public workers. The legislation was led by Senators Mazie Hirono (D-HI) and Patty Murray (D-WA), as well as Senate and House Democratic Leadership.

Following Calls From Senators Hassan and Shaheen, Health IG Launches Inquiry Into Health Department’s Treatment of Children Separated from Parents Under Trump Administration Policy
WASHINGTON – Following calls from Senators Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen, the Office of Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced yesterday that it would conduct a comprehensive review of the Office of Refugee Resettlement’s (ORR) Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) program. The request for an investigation follows weeks of uncertainty about the Department’s ability to appropriately care for children placed in its custody as a result of President Trump’s family separation policy, as well as the Department’s lack of clarity around plans to reunite children and parents. Senators Hassan and Shaheen joined 39 of their colleagues in sending a letter to the Office of Inspector General of HHS, requesting a comprehensive review of the Office of Refugee Resettlement’s (ORR) Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) program.

Senators Shaheen, Hassan Announce more than $4 Million in AmeriCorps Funding in New Hampshire
WASHINGTON – Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan announced today that New Hampshire has received more than $4 million in AmeriCorps funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps and other national service programs. The funding from CNCS will support 298 AmeriCorps members in New Hampshire. The funding is a significant increase from last year when New Hampshire received $2.9 million in AmeriCorps funding.
