Shaheen, Hassan & Kuster Announce $10 Million in Federal Funds for I-89 Infrastructure Project

(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02), announced that the Department of Transportation has awarded a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Grant to the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NH DOT) and its partners in Vermont for the Interstate-89 (I-89) Lebanon-Hartford Bridge Project. The federal grant is for approximately $10 million and will help rehabilitate two regionally significant interstate bridges that support I-89 and cross the Connecticut River, connecting Vermont and New Hampshire.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan joined a group of 13 of their colleagues in calling on the nation’s top health insurers to do their part to combat the opioid epidemic. WASHINGTON – In response to calls from Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Maggie Hassan, and 17 other colleagues, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) announced that it will review the Trump Administration’s response to the opioid crisis. The Senators’ request for the GAO investigation followed reports that the Trump Administration has taken little substantive action to step up efforts to combat the opioid crisis since the President declared it a public health emergency.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) today introduced the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) 2.0 Act to increase the funding authorization levels for the CARA programs enacted in 2016 and put in place additional policy reforms to help combat the opioid epidemic — including limiting opioid prescriptions to three days.  CARA was a bipartisan, national effort designed to ensure that federal resources were devoted to evidence-based education, treatment and recovery programs that work.  CARA 2.0 builds on this effort by increasing the funding authorization levels to better coincide with the recent budget agreement while laying out new policy reforms to strengthen the federal government’s response to this crisis.  The CARA 2.0 bill text is here, section-by-section here, and a brief summary here.

Senator Hassan Cosponsors Bipartisan Bill to Help Bring Justice to Victims of Heinous Crimes

WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan has cosponsored bipartisan legislation to help bring justice to victims of heinous crimes, including sexual assault, by ensuring that prosecutors have the resources they need to resolve cold cases. The Justice Served Act of 2018 was introduced by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and John Cornyn (R-TX) and would provide funds for the prosecution of crimes cleared through DNA. Bipartisan Bill Cosponsored by Senators Shaheen and Hassan to Support State and Local Veterans Treatment Courts Passes U.S. Senate

WASHINGTON – Bipartisan legislation cosponsored by Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan to support state and local veterans treatment courts passed the U.S. Senate on Thursday. The Veterans Treatment Court Improvement Act would require the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to hire additional Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO) specialists in order to ensure that veterans have greater access to effective and tailored treatment. The veterans treatment court model removes veterans from the regular criminal justice process and helps to address symptoms that are unique to veterans, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and substance misuse.
