Senators Hassan, Shaheen Statements on New Analysis Showing Economic Impact of Opioid Crisis in New Hampshire
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen today released the following statements on a new report about the economic impact of the opioid crisis in New Hampshire. The analysis, prepared by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Democratic staff and modeled after a national analysis conducted by President Trump’s Council of Economic Advisers, found that in 2016 alone the opioid crisis cost New Hampshire more than $5.3 billion from a variety of factors including health care spending, substance use disorder treatment, criminal justice, and lost productivity.

Bipartisan Hassan-Portman Hack DHS Act Unanimously Passes Senate
WASHINGTON – Yesterday, the Senate unanimously passed by voice vote the bipartisan Hack Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Act introduced by Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Rob Portman (R-OH) to strengthen cyber defenses at DHS. The Hack DHS Act would establish a bug bounty pilot program – modeled off of similar programs at the Department of Defense and major tech companies – that uses vetted “white-hat” or ethical hackers to help identify unique and undiscovered vulnerabilities in the DHS networks and information technology. The bill is also cosponsored by Senators Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and Kamala Harris (D-CA).

Senator Hassan Statement on Supreme Court Oral Arguments in Case Regarding Internet Sales Tax
WASHINGTON – Following the Supreme Court oral arguments today in the South Dakota v. Wayfair case, which affects whether New Hampshire small businesses selling products over the internet will be forced to collect sales tax for other states, Senator Hassan reiterated her opposition to any effort to impose mandatory internet sales tax collection. Senator Hassan signed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court, urging the Court to rule against South Dakota in the current case.

Bipartisan Group of Senators Introduces Bill to Allow Safe Disposal of Unwanted Drugs in Hospice
Washington, D.C. — A bipartisan group of five Senators introduced the Safe Disposal of Unused Medication Act of 2018 to respond to one aspect of the heroin and opioid abuse epidemic that is harming communities and families across the country.
