Sen. Maggie Hassan has introduced legislation to create a $1,000 tax credit for families with earnings of up to $200,000.

The Middle Class Tax Break Act would also provide a $500 tax credit for individuals with earnings of up to $100,000.

“As corporate profits continue to rise, too many middle class families in New Hampshire and across America are being left behind,” Hassan said in a statement. “Giving middle class families a $1,000 yearly tax cut will make it a bit easier for hard-working families to get ahead and stay ahead, helping to drive economic growth.

“Any federal tax changes must put working families, not corporate special interests, first.”

Hassan has cosponsored bills to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit. She has also cosponsored a bill to allow student loan debt to be refinanced and to ensure that families with incomes of less than 150 percent of their state’s median income do not pay more than 7 percent of their incomes on child care.
