Senators Hassan and Blackburn Reintroduce Bipartisan Bill to Support STEM Education

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) reintroduced the bipartisan Mathematical and Statistical Modeling Education Act to modernize science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education for K-12 students. This bill would direct the National Science Foundation to provide competitive grants focused on helping to modernize STEM education in schools.

“High-quality STEM education is an invaluable resource for students and will help prepare them to compete in the 21st century economy,” said Senator Hassan. “This bipartisan bill will help modernize STEM education, boost our economy by investing early in skills that develop our future workforce, and give students the tools that they need to succeed. At a time when the Administration is working to tear down support for public education, it is crucial that we reaffirm our commitment to investing in our students.”

“STEM education drives America’s competitiveness in the 21st century, preparing students for careers in research, defense, and technology,” said Senator Blackburn. “We must provide a curriculum focused on mathematical and statistical problem-solving, and the Mathematical and Statistical Modeling Education Act would support this by empowering schools to modernize STEM education with a focus on real-world applications.”

Senator Hassan has worked to make sure that students are prepared for the 21st century economy. She successfully worked to double funding for a program that supports rural students, including through college prep and career pathway programs. In 2022, Senator Hassan and colleagues’ passed into law the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, which authorized federal funding for New Hampshire and other states to expand workforce training programs in science, engineering, and manufacturing fields. Senator Hassan has also led her colleagues by introducing the bipartisan Gateway to Careers Act, which would support career pathways strategies that combine work, education, and support services to help individuals earn recognized postsecondary credentials.
