Shaheen, Hassan and Pappas Announce More Than 200K in Federal Grant Funding for Strawbery Banke Museum

(Washington, DC) –Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, along with U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) announced that the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has awarded $218,220 in federal funding to the Strawbery Banke Museum. IMLS is an independent federal agency that provides federal support for American libraries and museums. The grant will be used by the museum to develop and implement new interpretive strategies and programs for visitors in the historic Captain Walsh House located on its campus.

Hassan Joins Senate Dems to Call on Majority Leader McConnell to Act after House Judiciary Passes Gun Safety Bill to Ban High-Capacity Magazines

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Hassan joined U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and the Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), along with 23 other of their colleagues in calling on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to act on their Keep Americans Safe Act (S.447), which would prohibit the transfer, importation, or possession of magazines able to hold more than ten rounds of ammunition. Companion legislation passed the House Judiciary Committee last night.

At 9/11 Hearing in New York City, Senator Hassan Discusses Threats to Homeland Security with Former Department of Homeland Security Secretaries

NEW YORK CITY – Ahead of the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan joined bipartisan members of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee for a field hearing at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City. The hearing focused on the current state of homeland security and what needs to be done to keep Granite Staters and all Americans safe. Hearing witnesses were three former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretaries from the Bush and Obama Administrations.

NH Delegation Announces Over $300K in Federal Grant Funding for New Training and Safety Equipment for NH Fire Training Academy

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced with Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Chris Pappas (NH-01) that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded the New Hampshire Fire Training Academy $341,086 in federal funding through the agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. The AFG program provides direct financial assistance to eligible fire departments in order to enhance the safety of firefighters and the public. The funding will be used to purchase new firefighter training equipment and breathing apparatus cylinders.

NH Delegation Announces More Than $26.6 Million in Funding to Combat Substance Use Disorder Epidemic

(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Chris Pappas (NH-01) announced the award of over $26.6 million in federal funding to help combat the substance use disorder epidemic. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced the award of $22,982,608 in grants for the remainder of Fiscal Year (FY) 2019, under the State Opioid Response (SOR) grant program. This is the second allotment of $22.9 million to be made available to the state due to the New Hampshire congressional delegation’s successful negotiations of the bipartisan budget agreement in 2018. Thanks to the delegation’s efforts, New Hampshire will receive a total of nearly $35 million in SOR grants in FY 2019, more than a ten-fold increase compared to FY 2017. New Hampshire will use the SOR grant dollars to increase access to substance use disorder treatment and recovery supports, and enhance efforts to prevent substance misuse.

NH Delegation Announces Over $1 Million to Support Survivors of Domestic and Sexual Violence

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Chris Pappas (NH-01) today announced over $1 million to support survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Turning Points Network in Claremont will receive a $450,000 award through the Transitional House Grant Assistance Program, which is administered by the Department of Justice (DOJ), to support transitional housing for survivors or domestic violence. The amount awarded by the DOJ is an increase of $100,000 over last year’s grant award. Additionally, the Northern Border Regional Commission has awarded Turning Points Network $250,000 to support infrastructure efforts to move locations within Claremont. The delegation also announced that the New Hampshire Department of Justice would separately receive $383,741 through the Office on Violence Against Women to support rape crisis centers and other non-profit organizations that provide assistance to survivors of sexual assault. Senator Shaheen is the lead Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee that funds the Department of Justice. Congresswoman Kuster advocated on behalf of Turning Points for the NBRC grant. Shaheen and Kuster supported the organization’s Transitional House Grant Assistance Program grant application.

Hassan Highlights Impact of Wayfair Decision During U.S. Senate Hearing in Concord on Impact of Online Sales Tax Collection Requirement on NH Small Businesses

(Washington, DC) – Today, Senator Maggie Hassan highlighted the impact of the backwards Supreme Court Wayfair decision on small businesses during a field hearing on the internet sales tax collection requirement in Concord. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, hosted the event. The recent Supreme Court ruling in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc. determined that states with a sales tax are now allowed to collect sales tax from out-of-state businesses, including those in states without a sales tax, such as New Hampshire. Shaheen heard from representatives from Littleton Coin, TradePort, Alpenglow Benefit Auctions and Lupine Pet about the impact of this burdensome requirement on New Hampshire businesses, which are now forced to navigate additional red tape and incur new costs to meet this obligation.

Senator Hassan Slams Trump Administration’s Gag Rule Jeopardizing Patients’ Access to Health Care

WASHINGTON – Planned Parenthood announced today that it will pull out of the Title X program due to the Trump Administration’s gag rule that prohibits medical professionals at Title X health centers from providing full and complete information on reproductive health options to their patients. Title X is a federally-funded program that supports health centers that provide reproductive health care, cancer screenings, and other services. Title X funded centers deliver care to nearly 18,000 Granite Staters annually, and Title X supported Planned Parenthood centers serve 60 percent of those individuals.
