Shaheen & Hassan Legislation to Ensure Changes to VA Facilities Do Not Disrupt Services for New Hampshire Veterans Passes the Senate

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) released the following statements after appropriations legislation, which included their amendment to the VA MISSION Act, passed the Senate. The bipartisan VA MISSION Act that was signed into law earlier this month included language that would authorize an Asset and Infrastructure Review for all VA facilities, which could result in the reduction or realignment of facilities for states if the review commission determines them necessary. Shaheen and Hassan’s legislation would prohibit the use of funds for the realignment of facilities in states like New Hampshire that do not have a full-service VA facility until the Secretary of Veterans Affairs certifies that changes would not result in the disruption or reduction of services for veterans in those states.

Bipartisan Bill Cosponsored by Senator Hassan to Strengthen Protections for Whistleblowers Sent to President for Signature

WASHINGTON - A bipartisan bill, cosponsored by Senator Maggie Hassan to strengthen protections for whistleblowers, passed the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate and is now on its way to President Trump’s desk. The bipartisan Whistleblower Protection Coordination Act will permanently extend the program requiring a dedicated official in each inspector general office to focus on whistleblower protection issues. The bill changes the title of these officials from ombudsman to “Whistleblower Protection Coordinator” so that potential whistleblowers better understand the role of this position and authorizes Whistleblower Protection Coordinators to more actively promote and protect whistleblowing to employees in their agency.
