WASHINGTON – Bipartisan legislation cosponsored by U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) that would improve health care access – including mental health treatment – for veterans who experience disabilities or those who live in rural areas passed the Senate on Wednesday. The Veterans E-Health & Telemedicine Support Act of 2017 (VETS Act) expands telehealth services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), allowing veterans to use telehealth services from out-of-state providers and receive a wider range of VA health care services at home.

NH Delegation Applauds Administration’s Approval of Their Request for Disaster Declaration for NH Counties

(Washington, DC) — Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Congresswomen Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) and Annie Kuster (NH-02) applauded the decision by the Trump administration to grant a Major Disaster Declaration for the state of New Hampshire following damage and costs incurred by severe rain and flooding in October. In the wake of the October storm, the New Hampshire delegation wrote a letter of support for a Major Disaster Declaration for the State of New Hampshire. The cost associated with the storm damage is approximately $6 million statewide. The disaster declaration will grant assistance to Belknap, Carroll, Coos, Grafton and Sullivan counties.

WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) today announced that she is cosponsoring the Fix NICS Act, a bipartisan bill introduced by Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), John Cornyn (R-TX) and others to ensure that federal and state authorities comply with existing law and accurately report relevant criminal history records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). The bill penalizes federal agencies that fail to properly report relevant records and incentivizes states to improve their overall reporting. WASHINGTON – Today, Senator Maggie Hassan released the following statement after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a report showing that New Hampshire had the third-highest age-adjusted drug overdose death rate in 2016 and that more Americans died of drug overdoses last year than in any previous year on record. The data also found – for the first time – that fentanyl, not heroin, is now the deadliest opioid.
