Senators Markey, Murkowski and Hassan Introduce Bipartisan Legislation to Measure Progress in Ending Opioid Crisis
Washington (May 23, 2018) – Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), and Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) today introduced legislation to create a national roadmap for ending the opioid epidemic, which claimed more than 42,000 lives in 2016 alone. Their legislation, the National Milestones to Measure Progress in Ending the Opioid Epidemic Act, would require the federal government to set tangible benchmarks for how it is addressing the opioid crisis in and by measuring progress on key objectives each year. These objectives include reducing overdose deaths, expanding treatment availability, increasing the number of individuals in sustained recovery, and decreasing emergency room visits for overdoses.

Under Pressure from Senator Hassan, EPA to Consider Setting Maximum Contaminant Level for PFAS in Drinking Water
WASHINGTON – Under pressure from Senator Maggie Hassan and others, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt announced that the EPA will consider setting a maximum contaminant level allowed in drinking water for the chemicals PFOA and PFOS. Senator Hassan has cosponsored legislation that would require the EPA to develop a maximum contaminant level for perfluorinated compounds (including PFOA and PFOS). Administrator Pruitt’s announcement also follows pressure from Senator Hassan to stop blocking the release of a study about the health impacts of PFOA and PFOS in drinking water.

Politico reported this morning on emails showing that Trump Administration officials actively blocked the release of a draft study that concludes that PFOA and PFOS pose a danger to public health at levels much lower than what the EPA had previously considered safe.
